Mechanics and Farmers Bank was founded in Durham in 1907 and grew alongside the Parrish Street business district known as Black Wall Street. Today M&F Bank is a CDFI offering personal and business banking, with its headquarters on Durham-Chapel Hill Boulevard and branches across North Carolina. In July 2026 it announced a merger with Columbia's Optus Bank, with M&F branches keeping their name for about two years after closing.
