Description
Optus Bank began in 1921 as Victory Savings Bank in Columbia's Black business district, and civil rights leader Modjeska Simkins later managed one of its branches. Renamed Optus in 2019, it is a certified CDFI focused on small business lending, mortgages and deposit accounts, with branches on Gervais Street and Main Street downtown. In July 2026 Optus and Durham's M&F Bank announced a merger expected to close around year-end 2026.
